GALENOS

ABOUT GALENOS

A new living evidence resource of early phase research for research prioritisation in mental health.

It’s difficult for researchers, funders, people with lived experience, and others with an interest in mental health science to keep track of the ever-expanding literature. How can this information, which is published every day, all over the world, be gathered, analysed, and used effectively to design new research that makes a difference? This new project aims to tackle these challenges by creating a continuously updated, comprehensive and trustworthy catalogue of the best scientific literature that allows the mental health community to better identify the research questions that most urgently need to be answered. By creating datasets and insights that are easy to navigate in a state-of-the-art online resource, this project will accelerate discovery science into effective new interventions, and solutions for the 1 in 4 of us impacted by mental illness.

The Problem

Over the last 50 years, there has been a 10 times increase in the number of publications. There is a lack of understanding of underlying mechanisms, a piece-by-piece approach which is leading to research waste.

Our Vision

By creating a continuously updated, comprehensive and trusted catalogue of the best scientific literature the research community will be able to better collaborate to address the challenges that most urgently need addressing.

The Benefits

By creating datasets and insights that are easy to navigate in a state-of-the-art online resource, this project will accelerate discovery science into effective new interventions, and solutions for the 1 in 4 of us impacted by mental illness.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are funded by Wellcome, a global charitable foundation.

We will provide a programme of living evidence syntheses and research priority setting with a focus on anxiety, depression, and psychosis. We will synthesise scientific findings from foundation science, early translational studies or late translational trials in relation to: a) Diagnostic, prognostic, and predictive tools b) Pharmacological treatments c) Non-pharmacological treatments (these can range from self-care to healthcare, community provision to structural change)

We are the Global Alliance for Living Evidence on aNxiety, depressiOn and pSychosis (GALENOS) We owe our name to Claudius Galenus (129-216 AD) a Greek physician who lived in ancient Rome. He was a prolific writer, publishing over 400 works and is a founding figure for the clinical practice of medicine.
